A preparatory meeting for “Vertical City Asia” was held in Singapore from Oct. 4th to Oct. 5th, 2010. This meeting was jointly held by World Future Foundation (WFF) and School of Design and Environment (SDE) at NUS.

The following is the list of participating universities/schools: Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Tokyo University, ETH Zurich, Delft University of Technology, University of California at Berkeley and National University of Singapore.

University Colleague London, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University participated in the discussion afterwards. The college deans attended the preparatory meeting, representing their respective institutes, and a consensus for holding this design competition was reached. The details of the preparations, members of the review committee, intellectual property, and the results publishing of the competition were fully discussed and a memorandum of understanding was signed by participating schools. It was decided that the preliminary contest would be held from Jan. 1st to Jun. 30th 2011. In early July, each university will select two representing teams to attend the final contest in Singapore.

The Vertical City Competition and Symposium sponsor 10 prestigious schools of architecture from Asia, North America, and Europe to develop ideas and theories in urban and architectural form related to density, liveability and sustainability, specific to the rapid and exponential growth of urbanism in Asia. The 10 universities will compete, winners receiving the prize. WFF will cover all cost incurred.

Apart from attending the preparatory meeting, the college deans also visited Singapore's Urban Redevelopment Authority, Housing & Development Board, Pinnacle@Duxton, MRT & LRT. As the coordinator of the event, SDE made careful arrangement to ensure the success of the meeting.
